Sharfstein said that early on “when so little was known about COVID-19, stay-at-home policies kept the virus from infecting people and saved many lives. The working paper did not include new data, and serious questions have already been raised about its methodology.” “To reach their conclusion that ‘lockdowns’ had a small effect on mortality, the authors redefined the term ‘lockdown’ and disregarded many peer-reviewed studies. Joshua Sharfstein, vice dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said in a Feb. “The working paper is not a peer-reviewed scientific study,” Dr. In May 2020, the same journal published a study that estimated the number of cases in mainland China would have been “67-fold higher” by the end of February 2020 without a combination of non-pharmaceutical interventions.īut one working paper posted online in January - and not peer-reviewed - has gotten a lot of attention in conservative circles for its conclusion that “lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality.” The paper, which is an analysis of other studies, has been touted as a “Johns Hopkins University study,” but it’s not a product of the university’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, whose vice dean - among other public health experts - has criticized the paper. It estimated what would have happened if the transmission of the virus hadn’t been reduced, finding that 3.1 million deaths “have been averted owing to interventions since the beginning of the epidemic.” The estimate doesn’t account for behavior changes or the impact of overwhelmed health systems. For instance, a study published in Nature in June 2020 found that “major non-pharmaceutical interventions-and lockdowns in particular-have had a large effect on reducing transmission” in 11 European countries. There have been a lot of studies assessing whether and to what extent so-called “lockdowns” and various NPIs have been effective, and plenty of research that has concluded these measures can limit transmission, or reduce cases and deaths. But the WHO “recognizes that at certain points, some countries have had no choice but to issue stay-at-home orders and other measures, to buy time.” The more extreme measures - widespread business closures and stay-at-home orders, generally called “lockdowns,” though there’s no set definition - clearly came with economic and social costs, as the World Health Organization says. Without vaccines or evidence-based treatments, these non-pharmaceutical interventions, or NPIs, were the only public health measures available for months to combat the pandemic. In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as the virus spread around the globe, many countries implemented restrictions on movement and social gatherings in an effort to flatten the curve - or reduce sharp spikes in caseloads to avoid overwhelming health care facilities. Layered, tightly woven cloth masks offer more protection, while well-fitting surgical masks and KN95 respirators provide even more protection and N95 respirators are the most protective. Loosely woven cloth masks are the least protective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people wear the most protective mask that fits well and can be worn consistently. Masks should not be viewed as foolproof, as no mask is thought to offer complete protection to the wearer or to others. Observational studies, while limited, have generally found mask-wearing to be associated with a reduced risk of contracting the virus or fewer COVID-19 cases in a community.Ī few randomized controlled trials have found that providing free masks and encouraging people to wear them results in a small to moderate reduction in transmission, although these results have not always been statistically significant. Lab tests, for example, show that certain masks and N95 respirators can partially block exhaled respiratory droplets or aerosols, which are thought to be the primary ways the virus spreads. Multiple lines of evidence back the use of face masks to protect against the coronavirus, although some uncertainty remains as to how effective mask interventions are in preventing spread in the community. 1/18/2024 0 Comments Scrivener 3 windows beta themeThey may also have the appearance of an embossed surface like floral designs. Textures are sometimes used to give the appearance of gritty surfaces like sandpaper or stucco. They repeat vertically and horizontally to fill the space where they are inserted and are usually designed in a way that makes them fit together seamlessly so they look like one large image rather than repeated images. They may be very small, like 1/2” X 1/2” or smaller (but usually measured in pixels). Texture images are small repeatable images that are used to fill an area without having to use a giant image. You are expected to choose a texture image. If you click that button you’ll go to File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Macs. Some areas will also have a button labeled “ Choose Texture…”. Add background textures in Scrivener layouts The method for changing the background color is the same for any of those. (Even though it’s not openly indicated, Editor in the Composition Mode list also has a background that can be changed. For example, Main Editor has two background areas.Ĭomposition Mode in the left column has four different background areas listed that can be colored. If you see a Colors tab, look in the center column for any item that ends with “ background.” That will find most places backgrounds can be changed. If you click on an item in the left column and no tab labeled Colors appears in the right side as it did for the Binder we looked at earlier, you won’t be able to change the color of the background in that area. But here’s a hint to speed up your search for backgrounds in which you can change colors. We won’t go through every item listed in the left column. If you want to change back to the original default color, just click the button below the color rectangle. Below that is a small rectangle that should be the same color as the current background.Ĭlick that rectangle to select the color you’d like for the background of the Binder or Search Result Background, whichever you selected. Select one of those and in the third column you’ll see the name of the area that you clicked from the center column. You should see Binder Background and Background listed in the center column. If you click on Binder in the left column list, you’ll notice the right side of the settings panel has three tabs at the top. Change the background in Scrivener Composition Mode.Īs you click through the list down the left side, you’ll see that some of the areas listed there have two columns for their settings in the right side of the panel. However, the last setting on that page allows you to adjust the opacity of label colors that are used in backgrounds. In the Appearance panel, you’ll see a list of areas down the left side. In the Options/Preferences panel, select Appearance. The magic all happens in the Options/Preferences panel. I’ll show you how to do that plus a little secret that can allow you to have a full background image in some areas. In some of those areas, you can also insert a texture image in the background. You can change the color of the background in most areas of a layout. Scrivener calls the design and arrangement of the work area a layout. According to a previous NASA estimate, it cost around $450 million to actually launch a shuttle. Rudolph says that it will be a couple years before the facility is actually open, and that the entire planned Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center that will house Endeavour and other exhibits costs $400 million. “That whole pad can move independently of the building, and will withstand any foreseeable earthquake,” he adds. A look at a seismic isolator, beneath the main pad. And under that pad are a half-dozen seismic isolators, which Rudolph compares to “big ball bearings.” The Los Angeles Times has helpful graphics. “It’s a 8-foot-thick concrete pad that is surrounded on all four sides by a 3-foot moat, basically,” Rudolph explains. To mitigate against the possibility of an earthquake, the whole shuttle configuration will be perched on a thick concrete pad that weighs more than 3 million pounds. “We’ve got the last hardware-the last external tank-so it’s the only place in the world you’ll be able to see a full space shuttle stack in launch position,” Rudolph says. The whole flight assembly-Endeavour, the solid rocket boosters, and the tank-will together weigh just over half a million pounds, according to the California Science Center. Windy conditions, which could interact with the orbiter, would cause a delay. Like a real NASA launch, Rudolph adds that weather will play a key role in when they actually carry out that maneuver of lifting the actual orbiter into place. As an example, this incredible time-lapse video shows the space shuttle Atlantis being lifted and then mated with its solid rocket boosters and external fuel tank for the very last shuttle flight in July of 2011. California Science Centerįor this whole assembly operation, “we’re basically following the same process that Kennedy Space Center used,” Rudolph notes, adding that no one has put together a shuttle at a non-NASA facility before. These schematics envision how the orbiter will be lifted with two cranes. The plan holds that early next year, the 176,000-pound Endeavour itself will be lifted into launch position using two cranes, one of which will simply make sure the orbiter’s tail doesn’t hit the ground. Before Endeavour can join those SRBs, the 76,000-pound external tank (technically known as ET-94) must be moved into place, too. Those two SRBs will weigh in at a total of a quarter million pounds together. Other segments, called the solid rocket motors, which are about 116 feet tall, will join them to make up each SRB, as will parts called forward assemblies. The aft skirts comprise the base of the solid rocket boosters (SRBs). The aft skirts in position on the concrete pad. Each of those aft skirts are as wide as 18 feet and weigh 13,000 pounds and have both lifted off on actual shuttle flights. It kicked off in earnest on July 20, when two components called aft skirts came in via crane and were lowered into position on a concrete pad. To get it into the launch position requires an operation worthy of an actual NASA mission. This’ll be 200 feet tall-20 stories tall-and you’ll be able to look at it multiple perspectives, multiple views, at multiple levels.” “But it will be amazing, and we think far better display, when it’s vertical, with the whole stack. And instead of having to cope with the forces of a launch, the orbiter assembly will need to withstand any California earthquakes.Īs Endeavour is now, “it’s a great display, you can walk under it, look up at the tiles-it’s wonderful,” says Jeffrey Rudolph, the president and CEO of the museum. When that happens, it’ll be the only shuttle displayed vertically. But the museum has towering plans for the shuttle: It’s going to move it into a vertical position, and display it with solid rocket boosters and an external fuel tank, all attached together as if the ship was about to blast off into space. Right now, that space shuttle, which made 25 trips to space and back, is on display horizontally at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. And don’t forget about Enterprise in New York City, a shuttle that never flew into space but did glide through the atmosphere. You could travel to Virginia and see Discovery, or journey to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida to check out the angled Atlantis. If you want to see a retired NASA space shuttle, you have a few options. The space shuttle Endeavour's final flight was on May 16, 2011.
The publisher provided us with a review code for Shadow Warrior 3. Luckily, Shadow Warrior 2 is part of Xbox Game Pass so you won’t spend much at all, aside from the subscription cost if you haven’t redeemed one of the countless free trials.įlying Wild Hog nailed the visuals and combat in Shadow Warrior 3, I just wish the team expanded on the gameplay of Shadow Warrior 2 instead of going back to a traditional, very linear experience. The only downside is that it runs at 900p and 30 FPS even on Xbox Series X because it was never patched for Xbox One X. However, I’d recommend playing Shadow Warrior 2 instead because, in my opinion, it’s a much better game and represents amazing value. If you’re a fan of Doom-like shooters, be sure to check out Shadow Warrior 3. Due to this, the sequel feels more regressive. I’m not sure why Shadow Warrior 3 did away with them. Shadow Warrior 2 had a lot of mechanics that would encourage you to keep replaying levels to earn better loot, materials, or just test your skills with randomly-placed enemies. Given the fact that the title costs $49.99 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, this doesn’t represent good value in my opinion. Friends of mine who have more skill than I have managed to finish it in 6. Hopefully, Flying Wild Hog is aware of this problem and this too will be fixed by a patch soon.Īnother gripe of mine that goes back to replayability is how Shadow Warrior 3 can be completed in under 10 hours. You can’t even turn around without swapping weapons. I’m not sure if this is aggressive help from Shadow Warrior 3 or a bug, but when this happens it becomes almost impossible to play the game. Aiming was restricted to a small square where the enemy was. I’m not talking about just being inaccurate, but the game actively didn’t allow me to move, for example, my shotgun, freely. Control issuesĪnother problem I encountered was that certain weapons were hard to aim. Hopefully, the developer will issue a patch to fix this soon. This can be jarring to witness because frantic first-person shooters need stable frame rates. The game frequently drops down to around 45 FPS. Unfortunately, performance on Xbox Series X isn’t ideal. Given the fact that Shadow Warrior 3 requires split-second decisions and a lot of jumping around to avoid enemy attacks, a high frame rate is necessary. The title doesn’t give you the option to choose between Quality or Performance modes. The game appears to be running at a high resolution - around 1440p from my count - and hits 60 frames per second (FPS) most of the time. There was some confusion about whether that would be the case because Flying Wild Hog didn’t discuss them prior to launch. Shadow Warrior 3 looks great on Xbox Series X and features console-specific enhancements. My favorite has to be the katana-wielding ninja. Every beast is unique and requires some skill to overcome. While past entries had your standard enemies and some mythological creatures, this game really cranks it up to 11. It’s a sight to behold and looks spectacular on a modern display.Įnemy variety has also seen a substantial boost in Shadow Warrior 3. Shadow Warrior 2 was a little dreary for my taste, but the sequel is bathed in bright red and green materials. It’s much more vibrant than past entries, and takes the aesthetic of the original in a bold new direction. Shadow Warrior 3 does an amazing job with colors. Shadow Warrior 3 plays a lot like an arena brawler and you’ll need all the help you can get when playing at higher difficulty settings. While the grappling hook feels more scripted, it’s still interesting to use when you’re fighting monsters in closed environments. Just look for the jade circles dotted around levels. Shadow Warrior 3 also features a grappling hook that allows you to access even more areas. Combining these allows you to reach new areas and engage enemies in a variety of ways, especially if they're below you. You have a number of skills at your disposal like a double jump, wall run, and dash. For example, you can rip out one of the monster’s eyes and use it to freeze nearby enemies.Īs much as Shadow Warrior 3 is about combat, traversal also plays an important role in the game. The game takes heavy inspiration from Microsoft’s title, even when it comes to using body parts of enemies against them. Shadow Warrior 3 takes a more focused approach where you go from one area to the next, fighting enemies in Doom Eternal-fashion. Shadow Warrior 2 featured randomized enemy placements, wide-open levels, and plenty of secrets to discover.

Find the serial number of your console, and head over to.My console is the “regular size” Switch. My console is the small version that doesn’t plug to a TV: you have a Switch Lite.My console is the big one with the nice screen: You have the OLED Switch.Once you’ve got that out of the way, if you have a regular-sized Switch, you’ll want to determine if it’s an unpatched V1 (the older models), a patched V1, or a V2. The only easy thing you can tell at a glance is whether you have a “regular size” switch (the one that can dock to your TV), an OLED model (slightly bigger, better screen), or a Switch Lite (the portable only version). Everything else is doable but difficult/expensive Mariko, Erista, Patched, Unpatched… How can I tell which Switch console I have To rephrase: the only Switch consoles you can easily hack in 2022 are the unpatched V1 models. 2021 Saw the release of the OLED model, which is of course also patched against the 2018 hack.Īlthough it is technically possible to hack any Switch on the market currently, doing so on the original, unpatched V1 models is vastly easier and cheaper than the other models. In 2019 they also released the Switch Lite, a different form factor of the console, with a patched (not vulnerable to the hack) chip. In Summer 2019, Nintendo also released a full fledged hardware revision of the console, which didn’t have the vulnerability either, codenamed Mariko (or V2). Those patched units started reaching customers’ hands around Summer of 2018. In response, Nintendo started manufacturing an updated hardware version which did not have the flaw, and that would later be nicknamed “patched V1”, per opposition to the original “unpatched” models. Because it was a hardware hack on the Console’s NVidia Tegra chip, It allowed to hack all Nintendo Switch consoles at the time, independently of their firmware revision. In 2018, a hardware hack for the Nintendo Switch was disclosed by hacker Kate Temkin. A short history of Nintendo Switch Hacks and Hardware Revisions Whether you can hack your console (and how easily) depends on which model you have, and it’s not necessary easy to say at a first glance. iPatched Erista, or Patched Erista), V2 (a.k.a. You can currently categorize the Nintendo Switch into 5 categories: Original V1 models (a.k.a. TL,DR: although it’s technically possible to hack all models of Nintendo Switch as of the time of this writing, if your main objective is to hack a recently purchased Switch, your best bet is to resell it and buy an unpatched V1 Switch instead. I’ve tried to be as clear and accurate as possible, but as always feel free to let me know in the comments if anything’s inaccurate or simply wrong! In the guide below I’m trying to clarify what’s doable and what’s not. More and more people are buying a Nintendo Switch only to realize they cannot easily hack it in 2022. Unfortunately, not much has changed since 2021, but the wider availability (and fragmentation) of HWFLY Clones, as well as the OLED Switch meant additional explanations were necessary.
